Spooky Slumber Party Zumba

Every October, FTK hosts its first major event of the Fall semester, the Zumbathon! This event is a high-energy, dancing party, where a two-hour Zumba session is held and taught by the wonderful D Movement Fitness Studio. There are games, a costume contest, and of course, dancing!

 

This year the Zumbathon will be on Friday, October 13th from 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Recreation Center in the MAC Gym at UTSA. The theme is Spooky Slumber Party! Before the Zumbathon, we talked to our Events Management Director: Maria E. Guerra Garcia, our Operations Chair: Marissa Young, and our Special Events Chair: Krista Killam about planning and decorating for FTK’s Zumbathon

 

Maria is a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering, Marissa is a sophomore majoring in Public Health, and Krista is a sophomore majoring in Kinesiology. As part of the Events Management team, Maria and Marissa both design and create decorations for all of FTK’s events. “My role in planning Zumba is brainstorming decoration ideas and implementing! All of the decorations are made by hand with love,” says Marissa. Krista, on the other hand, plans the timeline, gathers the instructors for the event, and prepares and obtains the prizes for the costume contest.

 

The Events Management team’s goal is to bring to life the ideas for decorations and systematically plan the logistics of the event. “We think about what has succeeded in the past as far as entertainment goes, make a list of activities and order them based on priority and interest, and then execute that during the event,” says Krista Killam. All of the decorating and planning for every event for FTK is done during work nights, which are held every Monday and Wednesday evening.

 

 

The entire team works diligently every day to ensure that FTK’s events run efficiently and successfully and are enjoyable for everyone! “The best thing about being part of Events Management is having a voice in deciding what decorations and art pieces are to be created for the events. I hope that, through the decorations and the hard work my phenomenal team has put in, we can show our FTK families and the San Antonio community how dedicated we are to fighting and ending pediatric cancer.” says Maria.
